Experience
Throughout this module, my experience in research methodology has been quite challenging. I spend a lot of time identifying a research topic that is suited to my interest and going through many articles to support my study. The process of writing and editing the content was difficult and at the same time overwhelming. During the data collection phase, I had the chance to engage closely with older adults and gain meaningful insights into how they interact with digital interfaces. Conducting interviews provided valuable hands-on experience and allowed me to improve my communication skills, develop patience and practice active listening. Working with senior participants helped me become more empathetic and flexible especially when it came to explaining or guiding them through the interview process.
Observation
I observed that while all participants had access to smartphones and were open to using them, their comfort levels varied depending on their devices more frequently and were more confident especially in using apps like WhatsApp and WeChat to call and chat with other people. Visual elements like font size and interface layout have a significant impact on stability when we get older. I also noticed that some of the older adults take voice assistants to help them when they are busy and voice assistants were also helpful for someone who has problems in vision and memory that showed the importance of gradual exposure and clear instructions.
Finding
From the interviews, I found that older adults prioritize simplicity, clarity and usefulness in technology. Most preferred visual interfaces due to habit but appreciated voice features when introduced properly. Challenges such as small text, weak Wi-Fi or unclear voice commands were recurring themes. The study reaffirmed the need for inclusive design that digital tools should be tailored to meet the specific needs of the aging population to ensure usability, comfort and independence.
